Friday November 7 2002 2:54 PM ET Peckernac's Office & Others 'Censored' by AbsoSafe By VICKIE CHICKIE, Associate Press Writer
"I am completely flabbergasted," Congressman Peckernac told AP reporters. "Initially, I wondered why I wasn't seeing all the 'Reelect A Peckernac' yard signs and billboards I had seen before. When I got to my office, it appeared to be a nondescript warehouse without so much as an entrance or window, to say nothing of the huge 'Reelect A Peckernac Headquarters' sign. "That's when I decided to try looking without my AbsoSafe Glasses. Sure enough, everything was as it should be." A staffer for Congressman Peckernac contacted AbsoSafe, who immediately corrected the problem in their database and apologized for entering his office into a section normally reserved for Libertarians, Socialists, Natural Law-yers, Independants and other minority political parties.
Earlier this year, Congressman Peckernac supported the 'Neighborhood Child Safety Tax Credit Act' which provides tax credits for the purchase of AbsoSafe Glasses. Peckernac now says he is withdrawing his support from that bill "until AbsoSafe will absolutely guarantee that legitimate Democrat and Republic political institutions are not confused with inconsequential minority parties." Since the high-tech goggles were introduced over a year ago by AbsoSafe, some owners have registered complaints that they unfairly masked out non-mainstream religious and gay rights organizations. Anti-censorship organizations SerenityFlame, Meatspace Freedom Foundation, Center for a Technological Democracy and the American Liberated Civil Union are fighting to defeat HR7183 which provides tax benefits for the purchase of AbsoSafe Glasses. They claim that if the bill becomes law, it would mandate a mediocre world, give government the power to blind citizens to social issues that need to be dealt with and institutionalize government-supported censorship of minority viewpoints and organizations. A few state and local law enforcement agencies have also complained that AbsoSafe Glasses give parents a false sense of security, since they don't actually remove threats from a child's environment; they just hide their images from the viewer.
