Christmas piece. Aside from a few assertions that might or might not be accurate (the Mayo Clinic, for example has found no substantial increase of suicides around T-giving or Xmas, suggesting this might just be an urban legend), I think you've pretty much smacked this topic on the head with a hefty sledge. As my wife was freaking aroudn 12/15 due to the large crowds at the malls and her inability to find the "perfect gift" for everyone, I finally lost my temper and announced how the whole purpose of gifting gifts was to express love and consideration. Once gifts become a judge of one's relationship, the whole point of giving a gift is shot to hell. This shock seemed to help her calm down. But it's sad that positive acts could be reduced to miserable legalism.

I think your images were more shocking than anything you could have said. People are starving to death around the world as we're whining about not being able to buy a Furbie for someone we like. No wonder the world considers Americans as poorly and self-centered as they do. Most of us have never been in serious danger of dying from starvation or the cold.

From what I understand, Christmas has always been a commercial holiday, though, and some folk have always been complaining about it being so, but to little avail. Most of our Christmas traditions are recent (150 years?)and American, not imported from centuries ago. And Christ's birth WAS moved to Dec 25 to try to destroy the secular celebrations of the the time, but we've seen how well that worked. :) [He was actually born anywhere from spring to fall, from different things I've read.]

Did you guys read the clip about the American soldiers in trouble for writing witty but nasty comments on the side of one of the bombs fired upon Iraq? Supposedly for being cruel, or unnecessarily violent? I see. Let's blow them up, but do it "lovingly." I guess calling a spade a spade never gets much appreciation nowadays...

Anyway, keep up the good work. If I had time, I'd write something for you. Maybe someday.

after reading the spirit of the season/xmas card article, i have to admit i feel quite ashamed of a lot of people around me, including myself. here we are, every xmas eve, stressing over what to get our relatives and how many xmas cards we will have to send, pondering whether or not we will get that xmas gift we wanted so badly, and ahborring fruitcake that we fail to realize just how lucky we are...that not everyone has such a merry xmas...and we wonder why...maybe if we all hate fruitcake so much, we should send it to people who are lucky to even see a crumb of bread, let alone a giant fruitcake, what do you think...

May the true spirit of Christmas somehow reach your heart. And may God bless you even if you don't want him to.
