Notice: Due to our unwillingness to keep this gismo current (manufacturer's moving pages around, new computer manufacturers, etc.) interest in using it has naturally dropped to nil. We'll leave this page in place for those who might have links to it, for archive purposes. Here's the last version of our links to computer manufacturer web sites, not necessarily all working:

Computer Price Comparisons

Buy your next computer online from the
manufacturer, methodically and sanely.

Specifically configured for web sites offering desktop systems, not
notebooks / servers / handhelds, etc. -- although you may find them.

Instructions / Guidelines:

(If you missed the original introduction, it's here. This utility has been tested with Netscape4 and IE4, but may be buggy with earlier browsers.)

This button opens a toolbar window with links to various online computer stores. Clicking links on the toolbar will open that URL in this window. To get back to this page, click on "Instructions" at the top of the toolbar.

From the navigation window, clicking the button that looks like this ---- opens yet another window where you can take notes from your comparison shopping experience, and email the results to yourself. See the Instructions / Guidelines below.

The Criteria

Systems can be ordered and paid for:
  • directly from the manufacturer,
    (We're not interesting in middlemen.)
  • without talking to a salesperson,
(Not "we'll contact you with a quote.")
  • on a secure web site.
If you have purchased a system through one of these companies and have had good or bad experiences, email us so we can let everbody know.

As a bonus, we've added URLs to free ISPs at the bottom of the list. Bear in mind, these companies make money from advertising and there will usually be a list of questions about your buying habits to answer as part of the sign-up process.

Instructions / Guidelines 2:

If you choose to take notes rather than just peruse, we seem to have the best luck in this order:
  1. Enter your correct email address in the window, in place of the IP address (xxx.xx.xxx.xx).
  2. Click a link to one of the online stores and find a computer you would consider buying.
  3. Using the pull-down boxes, select the configuration of that computer.
  4. Note the name of the vender and price.
  5. Go to another site and find as close of a match as you can. If it is a better deal, enter the new vender and price for your configuration. Repeat as necessary.
  6. After you've finished your research, click the 'send' button at the bottom of the window to email your information to yourself.

Considerations:

  • Some of these online stores will let you select a base model as-is or allow you to customize it.
  • Your exact set of options may not be available from each manufacturer. Choose something close and note the differences from your original configuration.
  • If you have suggestions, notice information that is incorrect or has become obsolete, or know of new online computer companies to include with this utility, email us.

Be informed when new content is added. Email a Link to this page. Email the SOB who publishes this.
