Contest - Winter Solstice

21Dec00: Congrats to KR, winner of the contest with eight out of ten correct answers. Hers was the only entry.
Apparently we don't know how to do an interesting contest.
Answers are listed below the questions, in red.

First prize:

Second prize:
One item of your choice from the "Genuine Totalitarian Burger Stuff" Unquietmind store.

There are ten questions. Depending on your education and life experience, a few may be obvious. Some might require some digging. All of the answers can be found on the Web. None of these are supposed to be trick questions. You'll go to the trouble of finding the answers if you like this sort of challenge, not because the prizes are so incredibly valuable.

The purpose of this contest is three-pronged:

Give readers who like trivia a few minutes of mental stimulation;
Get readers interested in "Genuine Totalitarian Burger Stuff" by giving some of it away;
Increase the membership on our unquietmind eGroups list.

Anybody may send us answers to the ten trivia questions, but to be in the pool of contest winners (from which we will randomly pick the two prize winners), ALL of the following must apply:

In the event that nobody gets all ten (seems unlikely, but who knows?), we'll randomly pick among those who get nine out of ten, or eight... On 21December2000, the two winners will be chosen, and their names posted on this page. We intend to do a contest every three months, corresponding with each solstice and equinox.
