Limited Engagement

A Joke or misunderstanding? It's definitely an irony.

By: The Mystic | 10August2001

The newest message on a local reader board caught my eye a few days ago. Here's what I saw:

The message I received -- at first and second glance -- was presumably different from what the writer intended to communicate: Jesus (presumably, the one upon which Christian religions are based) is scheduled to appear August 10 and 11, at a local doin's called the Treasure Valley Festival.

This is an example of why those who place messages before the public would do well to learn about -- and employ -- punctuation. My brain probably doesn't work the same way as most people's, for I am often completely mystified about the intended message of reader boards, usually for their lack of punctuation. A question that doesn't end with a questions mark looks like a statement or a command. Missing periods turn sentences into incomprehensible run-ons.

But this one I found to be both sad and laughable for another reason: It is another example (about which I have previously written) of a business attempting to gain respect by appealing to religious folks. Specifically, if there's any validity to the famous "Sermon on the Mount" preached by Jesus, it would seem to be the wrong kind of business which should be claiming affiliation with the center of Christianity.

"Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

-- Gospel According to Matthew, KJV

Were I a Christian, I imagine I would be offended.
