About a year ago, the Unquiet Collective decided to give up editorial pieces and just do cartoons. A week later,
we changed our minds. Well, you got nearly another year's worth and I hope it has been worth the time you took
to read them.
Unfortunately, there have been some recent changes (blame the economy) and given that there's now only one of me, Unquietmind must change as well. Don't expect to see any more editorials published here. Although my personal priorities have changed as well, I'll continue to publish Totalitarian Burger, twice a month or so. [I can't resist opportunities to offend those who confuse mindless obedience with patriotism and poke criminal authority figures and moronic institutions in the eye.] I very much appreciate your financial support of unquietmind.com. The few of you who have been generous almost made up for many others who weren't able to give at all. Consequently, I should be able to continue to pay for the server space and bandwidth to keep Unquietmind online.
Some time ago, I attended a men's group for a few years. While I was attending, it was mostly unstructured: a few guys hanging out for one evening each week or two and drinking beer or coffee. Off and on, we sort of attempted to pick topics for discussion (although as I remember, the best discussions occurred when there was no given topic). One of the regular attendees -- I'll call him Duncan -- liked to describe himself as a writer. It seemed that no matter what the subject was that evening, Duncan would predicate at least one of his remarks with "As a writer..." Problem was, regardless of how often I asked, he never seemed to be writing anything specifically. I'd say, "So what are you writing these days?" Over a couple of years, I don't think I ever asked Duncan that question and got a positive response. If the man needed to feel that he was a writer without actively participating in the work... well, we all have our little illusions. The Internet (and the WWW specifically) came along at just the right time for me. The upside was that I was "allowed" to publish whatever I liked, written exactly the way I thought it ought to be, without having to put up with slash and burn editors who, somehow, hadn't seemed to master the ability to read. The downside, of course, is that Internet users are used to everything being free. Very few Internet "content providers" are making money. In the past, for the Unquiet Collective, that didn't matter very much. The articles that have been published here were written because its writer felt some bizarre need to express an opinion. I'll still be writing. (It's cheaper than counseling.) However, especially in an economy as shitty as the current one, it's simply not financially practical to spend a lot of time writing things to give away. I'll probably be working with those illiterate editors again, but what the hell? If I might eventually be paid for it... So, that's where it stands. I haven't any definite plans for Unquietmind, except to keep doing TB. Maybe I'll occasionally write a piece, from time to time, but don't count on it. There are a few guest articles still waiting to be published, and I'll catch those up soon. Unfortunately, I can't accept any more. Try your luck elsewhere. Thank you for your support. |
