Jefferson: Freedom of speech, the press; the right of the people peaceably to assemble...
Bush: Free speech zones!
Jefferson: No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law. The accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State, to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.
Bush: As "war president," I have the inherent power to seize and imprison any American citizen I suspect of having the slightest connection to terrorists. I can throw citizens in federal jails forever, without consulting a judge or getting an arrest warrant. I can take prisoners in secret, sans any specific charges. They have no right to lawyers and can be held without trial.
Jefferson: Cruel and unusual punishments shall not be inflicted.
Bush: We've redefined torture so that only gross brutality that causes "organ failure, impairment of bodily function or even death" can be considered torture.
Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
Bush: Bring them on!
